An adaptation of the Catechism for Young Children in modern English.
Question: Can you repent of your sins, believe in Christ, and lead a holy life by your own power?
Answer: No; I can only repent, believe, live by the power of God’s Holy Spirit.
Question: Can you repent and believe in Christ by your own power?
Answer: No; I can do nothing good without the help of God’s Holy Spirit.
Overall, the question and answers are expanded to more directly echo question 55. Additionally, the answer is recast as a positive statement to prevent the double negative construction. Granted, this does weaken the force of the original somewhat, but the positive construction is easier for children to parse. Next, the answer original answer’s (while true) is less focused on the actual issue of salvation, so we narrow it to the threefold action of repentance, faith and sanctified living. Finally, we also sharpen the language to contrast one’s own power with the Sprit’s power.
